A few things I’ve been playing with this month.

Field with sheep, Patch rd., Westminster VT

Whetstone brook, Brattleboro. This is a hand-held snapshot in low light at a bad angle (perspective corrected in Photoshop). I want to revisit it and do it right.

Playing around with this model. Perhaps he’ll get more work in the future.

Harlows apple orchard, Putney. My only shot from the recent full moon. Actually, two shots composted because of the exposure difference needed to get the moon and the branches.

Our flowering crabapple tree in the back yard. Smells as nice as it looks!

I’ve stopped to photograph this barn a few times before, but haven’t quite gotten the definitive photo of it yet. This time I concentrated on one wall and the cupalo instead of the entire barn. I’d still like to go down some day (or several days) with the freedom to explore the whole thing.

This is from a cornfield near the Retreat farm in Brattleboro. For some reason, they didn’t collect the corn this year and the dry stalks are still standing in the field. Various animals have been after the corn, so at least somebody benefited from the deal!

Found this while hiking in the woods on a 25 degree day. Puddles and small areas of still water in the swamp were just starting to ice over. The low sunlight hit this at the perfect angle to show off every detail.

Chair and Barn

I found this while out walking the back streets of a nearby town. I took a quick snapshot with the iPhone camera, but when I got home decided that the image deserved better. I went back the next day with my D300 and tripod to get a better photo. I lucked out that the late afternoon Sun was positioned perfectly when I got there.

I liked the composition, but it didn’t have any emotion to it. I started playing with black and white conversions and it did make a difference. After putting a few versions online, a friend suggested that I leave some color in the chair. I did this, at the same time letting the color ‘bleed’ a bit into the surrounding weeds as well.

Finally, the upholstery was a bland beige color that really did nothing for the image. I used the ‘color swap’ feature of Photoshop to replace it with a softer faded blue color.

The image still needs a bit more work before I’ll be perfectly happy with it, but I think it is close.

Out and about in December…

Toys on a fireplace mantle. The color was just too much, so I converted it to B&W and added some file grain.
