Slightly Askew
Photography
This is from an old barn just south of Claremont NH. It has been getting more and more twisted over the years and probably won't be standing for much longer. I found the time to get up there today to get a few picture of it before a heavy snow finished it off.

Finding the time
Photography

It's been tough to find the time to get out with the camera for a while. As it has been finding time to ride my bike (I finished the season about 1,000 miles down from my 'normal' miles) or even finding time to keep up with books and magazines I want to read!

Well, here I find myself with a week of vacation to use up, so have decided that the least I can do is get out every day and try to take a few pictures, then come home to see if I have anything worth printing. Here are two I got today, plus one from last week. If I stay on plan, I'll have more to post later in the week. If I can find the time...

I've been driving past this scene all Summer and finally got a chance to stop for a photo. I found this guy in a fenced in area at an open air flea market selling cement lawn ornaments (along with a lot of.... well... junk). It will eventually be part of my 'through the fence' series that I'm putting together.
A candid snapshot of this Obama supporter just as she was finishing hanging her sign. She was posing for a pic by a friend, but I grabbed this shot from a few hundred feet away with my 400mm lense.
I'm kind of surprised this one came out. I saw the scene but didn't have my tripod (or the 60mm lense I prefer to use on shots like this) so did the best I could in low light hand held. I guess the 'VR' really came through on this one, since I got a good sharp image. I went back the next night with the tripod and better lense, but the light just wasn't the same.

Curt and Betsy's Excellent Adventure
Everything Else

Well maybe not all that, but we are going out to Seattle and the surrounding area for a few days and I though I'd post some pics from the road. Go to this page to see an album. Initially it is just empty folders, but if I have time (and an Internet connection) each night in the hotel I'll update things.

I'm not promising 'art'... just some snapshots of what we've been up to so check back often! Click the 'read more' link for more information

Don't take my kodachrome away?
Photography

This took my by surprise today, I hadn't realized until I stumbled upon this Wikipedia article that not only has Kodachrome been 'dead' with no new stock produced in years, but that there is now only one lab in the world that processes it!

I never realy shot much Kodachrome myself, I liked the Fujichrome or velvia (both for color, and the faster turnaound of the E6 processing).

Yes, I have been taking pics
Photography
I haven't posted anything here for a few weeks, but it does not mean that I haven't been out doing stuff. Quite the opposite, I've been too busy in the evenings to have time to post what I've been doing on this page. So here is some catching up (in 100% non-chronological order):
I went down to spend some time at the Schell Bridge in Northfiled, Mass. I got some bracketed exposures I can use later to try to create some HDR pics. The leaves weren't out yet and everything was kind of drab, so I count this as more of a practice shoot than anything else.
While I was there, I caught this pic of some cyclist who REALLY didn't want to get caught out in the dark.
Some flowers from the yard, just for fun... not a 'keeper', but my first time playing with the 'live view' feature of the D300 which lets you look at and focus the image on the screen, just like you can in a 'point and shoot'.
I had to get this snapshot of the... OK, WTF *IS* it? The late afternoon light was lighting it up really well, so I had to stop.
And finally, the acting debut of Collin Laurin. I'll leave it up to you to figure out what play he was in. These shots were takes from the audience with a 50mm 1.8 at an ISO of 1600. Not bad for available light (though it did take a bit of work in PS to reduce some of the sensor noise).

This Old Tree
Photography

I remember this old tree, on the side of the trail up Putney Mountain, from when I was a kid. Back then, we would climb all over it without a thought about how long it has been there or how many other kids had done the same over the years.

Back then, it looked timeless. Now it is looking a bit worse for wear. A few of the branches coming off it are dead, quite a bit of bark is missing from the trunk, and there is an open crack where the large horizontal branch comes off the main trunk where water can pour in and rot the inside.

I used to think that this tree would outlive me... not so much anymore. Now I am happy every time I hike up to visit it that it is still standing. Some day it won't be, and I'll just have to be happy with the photos I've taken of it over the years. I want to go back again with my macro lense (and maybe a ladder) to get some more fine detail photos of the bard and old scars on this wonderful beast.

West River Whitewater Release April 26/27
Photography
The semi-annual whitewater release on the West River in Jamaica, Vermont is coming up on the weekend of April 26th and 27th, 2008. Even if you aren't a kayaker, it is a good outing for a hike, some photography and a bit of fresh air. I've been going up most years since even before I had a digital camera. This year I'm reallly looking forward to what I can do with the D300 & 80-400mm VR lense. For details, see the event website.

Beer #2
Beer

Tonight I opened up my first bottle of what I'll call 'Beer #2', the 2nd batch of beer that Jamie and I made and bottled just under three weeks ago.

Not bad! Nice golden brown color, good carbonation, already better than the flat underfermented 'Peoples Pint' ESB I had at Mesa Verde last night. I think it would benefit from another few weeks of 'conditioning', but certainly not a bad beer. :)

As I write this, I can feel the beginning of a good 'buzz' (I've downed about 1/3 of the bottle), so I think the alcholol content is OK...
